New Growth

there’s water in the window frame it hasn’t been closing right
ever since the spring rain came and we gained more daylight
well just leave the window open, you know it’s just as well
and as the winter freeze is ending the whole town starts to swell
old growth framed these houses
and so what was is no more
oh but just as nature’s intended
new growth is what I’m looking for

now my father a fair carpenter and mason by trade
taught me how to frame a house and saw that I was raised
knowing the difference between wrong and right
and my mother she ensured I was bathed in the light
my old folks they remember
oh how things were before
oh but just as nature’s intended
new growth is what I’m looking for

salvage what won’t fall apart
make the most of stove and hearth
the mistakes of yesterday
are being played out today
and I shudder at the fire
and at thought of all that has transpired
but as long as we don’t tire
all debts will be repaid

and so the town hall meeting has commenced and springtime has arrived
let us usher out the waning moon and the old stars that preside
over this gathering, let the sheriff be condemned
yeah let us get rid of the rot and start the whole thing up again
in old times men were tempted
by the wealth of fruit the forest bore
oh but just as nature’s intended
new growth is what I’m looking for
oh but just as nature’s intended
new growth is what I’m looking for
