Southeast Engine is pleased to announce the release of our fifth album, Canary – out
March 29. The album is available for pre-order at on CD format – complete with full booklet containing all lyrics – and on canary yellow cassette with digital download. The cassette version is a boutique item and only 200 were pressed. All pre-orders will come with a limited-edition poster created by longtime friend Thomas DeFranco. SEE has scheduled a handful of February dates, a full March/April tour and will continue to announce shows in support of the record’s release.

Canary is an album born out of Athens, Ohio – the home of frontman Adam Remnant. The songs focus on a family living in a small Appalachian town in southeast Ohio during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The album is simultaneously personal and social dealing with themes of growing up, hard times, family, and sustainability. Southeast Engine went in to record the album during the harsh Athens winter of 2010. They left the studio with an album that musically combines the band’s folk-rock aesthetic with the old-time elements of Appalachian music.

Southeast Engine had the privilege of touring extensively with Deerhoof in 2010. Upon the relaunch of Misra Records (now run by SEE’s own Leo DeLuca) Gregory Saunier of Deerhoof selected Canary’s “New Growth” for the Misra Legacy Compilation, Volume I and we’ve included it again [here].
